Enhancing emergency response with a

Community First Responder scheme?

Our Community First Responder scheme (CFR), a dedicated group of highly trained volunteers, operating as a charity under the governance of the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust. This initiative addresses a critical need, addressing the UK’s statistics for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survival rates.

Approximately 600 lives are lost annually due to cardiac arrests, with rural areas facing longer emergency service response times compared to urban settings. Therefore bridging this gap, SNCR CFRs play a crucial role in improving survival chances providing timely medical intervention in rural communities.

Every Minute delay reduces the

Chain of survival

Every Minute delay reduces the chance of survival.

Community First Responders (CFRs) are a critical link in emergency medical services, swiftly dispatched by the control room to reach emergency scenes within minutes. In situations where a frontline ambulance is also dispatched, CFRs provide immediate, life-saving interventions while waiting for the frontline ambulance arrival. They conduct essential patient assessments and begin treatment if necessary, ensuring continuous care until the East Midlands Ambulance team takes over. This seamless integration of CFRs with ambulance services is pivotal in enhancing patient outcomes in urgent medical situations.

Chain of Survival

Community First Responder Scheme – Training Volunteers

Our Community First Responder Scheme is pivotal in training local individuals with safe, effective techniques for saving lives. Therefore techniques, taught minimise risk and are crucial in critical situations where action is far preferable to inaction. All CFRs undergo rigorous training to meet high standards and operate within a strict code of practice. Backed by the East Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Trust, CFRs are indemnified for accidental injury and third-party liabilities, ensuring a secure environment for them to provide life-saving care under established protocols.

Trained First Responders in your community

Community First Responders (CFR) give life-saving aid to patients in their community who dial 999 or 111. Community First Responders are not employees of East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS), all CFRs are volunteers who undertake training to be able to help the people in the community with the support of EMAS frontline services.

What types of Call

Do we respond to

Community First Responders are primarily dispatched to respond to “Category 1” emergency calls. These are urgent 999 calls classified by the East Midlands Ambulance Service as “Serious and/or life-threatening,” where medical assistance is needed as quickly as possible, ideally a CFR will be on scene within 7 minutes of the call. Early intervention by our CFRs is crucial in improving survival rates, as they provide life-saving interventions during these critical first moments.

Expanding Lifesaving Skills

Community Public Access Defib (CPAD) placement /AED Training

While not always on call for the East Midlands Ambulance Service, our Community First Responders play a vital role in educating the community about the use of public access defibrillators (CPAD). You might notice these life-saving devices in various public locations. At SNCR we provide tailored solutions, offering both defibrillator cabinets and public access defibrillators to meet specific community needs.

Our training programs empower the general public, teaching them how to access and effectively use defibrillators during emergencies, thereby enhancing community readiness and response capabilities.

Supporting Our Community Beyond Emergency Calls:

Event First Aid and medical cover

In addition to being on call for the East Midlands Ambulance Service, our Community First Responder scheme plays a broader role in the community. SNCR offer event first aid services to ensure safety at local gatherings, festivals, and public events. This initiative is carried out by SNCR dedicated volunteers, with the fees received for event coverage being reinvested into the scheme. This not only supports operational costs but also strengthens our ability to provide the community emergency response and training programs. By participating in these events, SNCR further commitment to community welfare and readiness, enhancing our presence and impact within the Northampton and South Northants region.
