The SNCR team boasts over 45 dedicated responders across Northampton and South Northants, each trained to a minimum of Level 2, driven by a shared passion for community support. Our resources include four branded scheme cars and Event Medical support units, all financed through grants and donations. This strong foundation enables us to extend vital support to our local and broader communities, emphasising our commitment to providing exceptional emergency assistance to East Midlands Ambulance Service.

David is the South Northants Community Responders scheme coordinator, he has been a responder for 6 years. David joined so that he could help people when in times of need and to get experience working with other emergency services. David‘s experience over the years has taught him that calling for ambulance does not always solve the issue. The patient isn’t always the person that needs treating the most rewarding allocation he attended was a call for a patient who was not responsive. On arrival the patient had passed away. The family on scene were distraught.

"I comforted them and gave reassurance to them. We are not there just for the patients. I explained what happened and what will happen next. Its a sad outcome but the family thank me and I felt that I made a difference."

Anne works in the Talent & Development team for the Sainsbury’s group in Holborn, London. Anne is a level 3 responder. Anne enjoys taking out new responders on buddy shifts and building their confidence and putting the skills they’ve learnt straight into practice.
If you have a question then don’t worry Anne has probably asked it. Anne definitely makes you think about your role as a responder, we are pretty sure she has the record for most questions asked in a shift... 😂
Where did Anne hear about the CFR scheme “I heard about the role of a community first responder when an elderly gentleman had a fall outside my house. I live in a rural village and a responder was on scene and provided care until the ambulance arrived” This prompted Anne to join up and to be able to help her local community.
Being our most southern based responder based in Deanshanger, Anne supports a community that is a fair distance from the Ambulance service. Having this cover in a more remote location is invaluable for a community.
The first allocation Anne was sent to was an overdose/suicide attempt, there is a good chance that you will be thrown straight in at the deep end. This is why we have a mentor scheme so new responders are able to build up gradually by doing shifts with experienced responders like Anne. Like Anne’s most recent allocation, sadly another suicide attempt, they can be very stressful situations however we have a peer2peer network that we rely on if the need arises to support our responders.
A common answer about the hardest thing about being a CFR is never knowing the outcome of the care you provided a patient as we always pass over the care to the ambulance crew.
Anne is another perfect example of a responder, she has an abundance of compassion and empathy with patients and, we are sure she will be ok with us saying, does get upset with allocations showing precisely how much she cares for the patient’s welfare she attends.

Martin is the deputy Scheme Coordinator, a Charity Trustee and has been a Level 3 responder for over 5 years.

Outside of SNCR, Martin is a director of a sports business providing coaching support for schools and tutors Safeguarding & Protecting Children workshops on behalf of UK Coaching (a division of Sport England) and similar workshops designed by the Child Protection in Sport Unit (NSPCC).

‘I became involved with the responders following an appeal to help provide support for the people in my small village and surrounding area. This has meant that I’ve been able to provide help to some of the people I already knew quite well at stressful moments in their lives. I believe that quiet and confident support has helped, even in the most difficult of circumstances’.

Steph has been a responder since May 21 and has truly excelled in the role. Steph joined the scheme to do something to help others and challenge herself as well as being a Fundraising Manager at the MND Association ... To top it all off and challenge herself more Steph has taken on the role of Events Trustee, Coordinating events for SNCR with local event organisers who need first aid cover at their events.

Steph’s goals are to make sure people know about the scheme, help the local community and help others to learn the importance of CPR. Joining the scheme has "Pushed me outside my comfort zone" Steph highlights that there is always something to learn on every job, even taking this back to everyday life and learning, now, not to sweat-the-small-stuff and that she can do more than she thinks. Being confident to help a stranger in their time of need as well as supporting a family at the same time is no walk in the park, Steph is a natural in the role and has certainly attended a mix of allocations, in the short time in SNCR, from cardiac arrests to social support.

Steph is a natural carer and does struggle leaving vulnerable people at home knowing their circumstances. Steph is supported by her fiancée, and dog who help keep her busy and active outside of CFR life.
